How it Works: FAQs

What is an invitation template?

At Wedding Whippet you can browse all of our stationery templates. We offer digital templates for sale, and each template purchase will include files that can be edited in both Canva and Adobe InDesign. A digital template allows you to easily edit your own text content on the invitation, and either use our recommended printer, Moo, or choose your own printer for printing your invitations.

A digital template is also a great budget-friendly option for your wedding stationery. Many stationery stores will charge a large fee for the design and printing of your invitations. At Wedding Whippet, we allow you to take control of the design of your invites and your budget too!

What sizes are the invitation templates?

All of the invitation downloads available at Wedding Whippet include two sizes, optimised for UK/Europe and USA printing. Simply choose the size which is the best fit for your territory. While most sizes are very similar to each other, dimensions may be listed in inches or centimetres, depending on the metrics preferred by printers in your country.

The sizes of the templates have been chosen as easy-to-print standard sizes, which means it is easier to find printers to print them and envelopes that fit perfectly!

Full details of the sizes available for your chosen template are listed on the product page and in the ‘READ FIRST’ text file included in your download.

How do I edit my invitation templates?

A template purchased from Wedding Whippet will include editable versions of your invitations that you can open in one of two programs:

  • Canva - You can edit your invitations using Canva’s handy online editing software. The link to the relevant Canva template will be included in the ‘READ FIRST’ text file that is in your download folder.

  • Adobe InDesign - Your download will also include a packaged Adobe InDesign file, including an INDD file for opening in Adobe InDesign CC, and an IDML file that can be opened in earlier versions of Adobe InDesign, including CS4, CS5 and CS6.

While Canva is arguably more intuitive than InDesign, both of these programs are relatively easy to use. Watch this video for a walk-through of editing your invitations in Canva and InDesign.

How do I export my invitation templates?

Once you have edited the text on your invitation, and are ready to print it, you will need to export the artwork:

  • Canva - Head up to the Share icon at the top-right of the screen. Then choose Download and PDF (Print). There is no need to include crop marks and bleed as these are included as part of the design. All templates include a 2 mm (UK/Europe) or 0.075 inch (USA) bleed width as part of the design visible on the screen.

  • Adobe InDesign - With your InDesign document open, go to File > Export. Choose Adobe PDF (Print) for the Format and click Save. In the Export Adobe PDF window that opens, choose [Press Quality] from the Adobe PDF Preset menu at the top and then Export.

You can then upload your exported PDF artwork to Moo, another print-on-demand site or a local printer, see below.

How do I print my invitation templates?

Upload your exported PDF invitation to Moo (see the ‘READ FIRST’ text file in your download folder for links and tips), to a different print-on-demand online service or send to your local printshop.

Can I print my invitations at home?

We don’t recommend printing your invitations at home unless you have a very good home printer. However, if you are having a small number of guests at your event, you could print your invitations at home on high-quality paper stock (we recommend at least 400-600gsm weight). You will need a craft knife, craft board or guillotine for cutting your invitations to the correct size after printing on a sheet of A4 card.

I love the design of my invitation! How can I theme my other wedding stationery along the same lines?

We are always adding to our store of stationery templates, so check the collection (e.g. ‘Cherry Blossom’) to see if other templates are available in the series. If you can’t see a template you have in mind, get in touch to discuss extending the style you love to other stationery, such as menus, seating plans or signage, or for bespoke event stationery.
